Consecration Sunday is November 9!!

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their income.

Grace has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship program as a way to teach the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people to toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question: “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, (November 9) we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world.

Ever attendee and members who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending worship on November 9 (11 am). We urge people to attend who feel opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal awkwardness or manipulation if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.

We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader (Pastor Fred Seay, First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles) will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.

We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events from now until November 9.

Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask
people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday.

The catered meal after 11 am worship on November 9 is called a “Celebration Luncheon.” I like that. We celebrate because we do not stress the church’s needs for funds. We celebrate because we do not (and cannot) shame or guilt trip people into generosity. We don’t want financial contributions to “pay the bills” or “support the budget”—we want to grow spiritually by giving the “first fruits” of our income to the Lord.

I hope we give because: we feel gratitude to God; we see giving as part of our spiritual relationship with God; we feel privileged to serve; and we take joy in helping others.

Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

~In Christ, David Jones

WESLEY UNITED CAMPUS MINISTRY REPORT:

Things are going well this semester. We got off to a strange start with missed school for hurricanes, but our Monday Lunches and small group Bible studies are now in full swing. The first weekend of October, which was UL’s fall break, a group of students put feet to our faith as we engaged in local mission projects, helping Faith House ministry with post-Gustav clean-up.
We are looking forward to beginning our Wednesday evening worship services in the coming weeks and to inviting more students to participate in the life of our ministry. We invite your prayers for us that we may finish this semester in a strong way! Please call 235-6073 or check out our website (ulwesley.com) if you have questions or would like to find ways to support us. Thank you for your support and God bless your ministry!
